Meet team Kwema: Dulce

I remember the moment perfectly the first time I was assaulted. I was 12 years old when a schoolmate touched my butt, I turned to look what happened and saw him laughing with his friends. I didn’t know how to react, tears flowed down my face with disgust and anger. Today I am still angry with my past self for not being able to respond to this aggression.

I have never understood why we have to defend the obvious, why the role of women in this world is so complicated to understand. I know that you, like me, have thought twice when buying that cute short skirt, or that pretty shirt with cleavage. I also know that you walk to the other side of the street when you see another man approaching you in the opposite direction. You are not alone when you put your keys in your hands to act as a weapon, running through the thousands of possible scenarios in your head.

I have always lived with these feelings of frustration, injustice and insecurity to the point of accepting it within my routine. But fate would put my thinking to the test ...
After I finished University I had no idea how to start, what I did know was that I needed to find a place that believed in me as much as I believed in them. Fortunately this was easier than I had thought; when I met Carmiña, CEO of Kwema, I knew that this was my place.
Kwema for me is an opportunity, a single word that changes everything,  a word that makes you feel safe and care for the ones you love.

My name is Dulce Hernández, I am a part of team Kwema and I invite you to join our community.
