As Black History Month comes to a close, we’re reflecting on the work of Dr. Camara Jones and her widely cited metaphor, “The Gardener’s Tale.”
The story offers a powerful reframing of how inequity operates. It is not about blame. It is about understanding how unequal conditions produce unequal outcomes — and how systems, often invisibly, shape what is able to grow.
In healthcare, this lens is particularly important. Outcomes do not emerge in isolation. They are influenced by the environments we design, the policies we uphold, and the priorities we reinforce.
Dr. Jones’ framework challenges leaders to look beyond individual results and toward the structures that sustain them.
If disparities persist, the question may not be about effort, but about conditions.
